Whether things go wrong or right,
writing matters.
Just today, with a few strokes of the pen,
I coaxed a slammed door open,
pulled back curtains to let in light,
and took my heart for a walk.

My granddaughter looked up and said,
“Just now, sitting
there, book in hand,
cat on your lap,
gray hair and glasses on your nose,
you have become
a t.v. ad
about aging.”
Somehow, when I was least aware,
age crept up on
me and, like that
cat, settled in.
My hope is that we (age and me)
will find a way
to purr along
in harmony.

What ?! Help without an
attitude? My teenager
must be growing up.

Small courtesies, both
received and given, lighten
loads on heavy days.

With each passing day
autumn leaves grow more somber
as some begin to fall.
Others, though, glow golden
in the setting sun.

Though more comfortable
places surely can be found,
my cat edges her
way onto my lap, plops down
and begins to knead.
It doesn’t matter to her,
as she lies there and
purrs, that I was otherwise
occupied; nor does
she know her presence lulls my
busy mind and brings me rest.

When we get to the end, we sometimes find
the poem we
wrote wasn’t
what we
had
in
mind when
we began.
Sometimes, it’s worse,
sometimes better, but always worth the try.
Is this also
how we come
to craft
lives
much
different
than we planned –
real lives that help
us learn to live more fully and more free?

Tell me, my clever
son, how many poets does
it take to change a light bulb?
~
None,of course. Poets
may light the spark but change
must glow from within the bulb.
I made God laugh today
when I held forth,
and for a long time too,
telling Him what He could do
to get things more in line
with what I thought was best.
I don’t for a minute see
what about this caused such glee.
It remains a mystery.
JDG
Never mind the mind.
It’s just doing what minds do best –
solving and making problems
for us and all the rest.
When in service to an open heart,
it’s clear and spacious, wise and true.

An impatient wind
sends leaves shivering across
cold ground, yet the sun
keeps watch in a calm, blue sky.
A foreshadowing…
A harbinger…Or maybe
just Autumn’s mixed metaphor.
