Intervention

Right here, right now, as I sit down to write,

my cat plants her

purring self

on my

lap

and

begins

to nudge my

writing hand as

if to say, “You can write another day.

I’m old and I

need you right

here, right

now.”

She

is soon

joined by a

lonely dog, and

right here, right now, I set my pen aside.

That Elusive Pause

That elusive pause – the time to stop, to

take a few breaths,

to assess

if the

path

I’m

about

to take is

the one I should

tread. Will it take me where I want to go

and will I be

the kind of

person

I

want

to be

as I walk

the path ahead,

be it an easy one or one that’s rough?

Learning The Craft

When we get to the end, we sometimes find

the poem we

wrote wasn’t

what we

had

in

mind when

we began.

Sometimes, it’s worse,

sometimes better, but always worth the try.

Is this also

how we come

to craft

lives

much

different

than we planned –

   real lives that help

us learn to live more fully and more free?

A Little Learning

When I first heard her say,”This is something

up with which I

will not put,”

I thought

she

paid

too much

attention

to the don’t end

a sentence with a preposition rule.

Later I learned

she enjoyed

making

fun

of

those rules

dreamed up by

some folks with

more time on their hands than brains in their heads
