Lost in thought, I almost missed the soft touch
of that small hand
upon my
arm. “Could
you
help
Nana
zip her coat?
Her hair’s gray too.”
Nana and I smiled and got to work.

It wasn’t until I paused
and took a breath
that I saw what was set before me –
a banquet of tiny, bell-shaped flowers.
pink with leaves of rusty red –
a petite visual treat.

Trees – some evergreen,
some budding, some still bare – form
a living lattice:
playground and feeding station
for acrobatic squirrels.

There they stood, Murphy
the cat, Jimmy and Toby,
the dogs. They clearly
had weighty matters on their
minds.“What?” I asked. First
Murph and then the others glanced
at their empty bowls
and then back at me. “I just
got home,” I said. “Cut
me some slack,” but they were not
in a slack-cutting
mood. “I’m just here to serve,” I
muttered as I filled
their bowls and they began to
feed. On that we all agreed.

Inconsistency –
is that all we can count on
in these constantly
changing times? Or is there more –
something beyond what we see ?

In order to save a few minutes, we
speed up and lose
our pleasure
in what’s
here.
We
rush to
pursue what
isn’t here, then,
exhausted, we start all over again.

We think we know a lot and we do, but
it is wise to
ask if it
is all
true.

Expect the worst
whenever considering
possibilities.
That was my
heritage
from Mommy and Dad.
To date
is to get a girl
pregnant.
To buy a bat and ball
is to cause
serious injury.
Going to the University of Chicago
ruined a friend’s
view of life.
Growing a beard
will wreck your
ministry.
Driving from Virginia
to California,
expect your car
to break down.
Expecting the worst
still is my first
and
deeply ingrained
reaction.

A child looks at
falling snow flakes, announces
pixies are dusting
cobwebs from empty mansions
in the sky. Spring’s almost here.

White sky blossoms fall
and join earth’s bursting blooms –
two seasons unite.
