Feeling gratitude for a number of
unspecified
things, though I
could name
more
than
a few
if I had
to. It’s enough
to bask in unenumerated joys.

Suddenly I saw
what I couldn’t see before.
When my gaze was fixed
within, I couldn’t see your
outstretched hand pointing
to that baby squirrel digging
so determinedly.
Then I heard you ask if I
had joined the squirrel
in a never-ending search
for something below
the surface, something sensed, but
unseen. I looked up and saw.

Daffodils shiver
as their golden trumpets
announce the approach
of this year’s stuttering Spring.

Side by side they sit
on the dock down by the pond,
those two sisters who
have weathered so much and who
find shelter in each other.

When I consider all that had to happen
in just the way it did
for me to be here right now,
I realize I am
a miracle of time and circumstance.
I grow still as I ponder
this improbable gift of life.

I don’t have to be
perfect, but I can at least
return after a few days off
and begin once more
and so I do.

Ignoring March’s
blustering winds, cherry trees
join forsythia
and golden daffodils as
budding stars of shining Spring.
