Tried and untrue – What
is it that makes me think that
repetition will
make what was first false become –
somehow – magically true?

Casting about for
something to say even though
silence is golden.

Sometimes subtlety is set aside
and the universe speaks directly
and to the point
as my family all agreed
when the fortune cookie I received read,
“Any impatience you show
will only create more stress,”
to which I replied,
“Who asked you, universe?”

When turkeys returned
to the hill, (no, I don’t mean
Congress) I knew green
(no, I don’t mean corporate
cash) would soon color the scene.

With the slow turn of seasons,
a certain peace comes from
pondering the imponderable,
knowing we too must have a place
in the ever-changing
natural order of things.

I’ll say this for squirrels – unlike birds, they don’t
leave a lot of
mess behind.
Perhaps
next
snow
I’ll put
out squirrel
feeders instead
and save myself a lot of clean-up time.

When the big questions
seem to be without answers,
I turn to the small,
like how can I be of help
and what do I really need.

Perhaps the wise have the courage to first
be judged as fools
as they thought,
acted,
and
lived
outside
the tidy
box of what was
and was not thought to be possible.

These days, I dream in color,
My nights are full of stories
Instead of the nightmares
That for years, dogged my slumber.
These days, I sing along with the radio,
Even though my voice is not the best.
I don’t worry what others think of me,
I just lose myself in the music.
These days, I dress for comfort,
Instead of obsessing over how I look.
Favorite clothes wrap me in
Their familiar embrace and make me smile.
These days, I do what makes me happy
Without concern for external validation.
I find freedom in my own weirdness
And let others take or leave me as I am.
These days, I don’t bother with shame,
I choose instead to embrace joy,
I give myself permission to be ridiculous,
And I laugh at myself all the time.
These days I still fight my battles
Against anxiety and depression
Not because I don’t want to be a burden to others,
But because I know I deserve to be happy.
