If you add things up,
it all comes down to this –
out of one, many;
out of many, one.

A certain quiet
fills the house and for a time
I breathe deep and slow,
cherishing each breath as it
comes and goes. It won’t
be long before chattering
girls return, bringing
with them a different kind of
joy, but for now I
celebrate having placed our
mailbox distant from the house.

If not warm, at least
our days have brightened some with
clear skies and gold sun.

For the kids
it’s snow consolation.
For me
it’s no consolation –
this white winter madness
highlighting
a generational divide.

Inexplicable
sadness, like a low-hanging
fog, hovers over
the day, matching gray with gray,
restricting vision,
concealing swollen tree tips
and the slow approach of Spring.

Even Hemingway
found it hard, not just in large
ways but in small, to
find grace under pressure. He
aptly called such grace
courage because it comes from
a strong and open
heart. When the stakes seem high or
time seems short, may we find grace.

I’ve taken to my bed,
not by choice but to avoid
the dance-off in the living room.
I settle in and what do I see
but bright birds of red and blue,
and birds of lesser color too,
line dancing on the porch’s rail.
Perhaps it’s time I rouse myself,
and join all those who
find a way to dance.

Even those of sunny temperament find
it hard to shine
as these days
of ice
and
gray
go on
and on and
togetherness
requires a stiffening of the spine.

After tense negotiations, a truce
between Grackles
and Jays has
come at
last.
Peace
at the
bird-feeder
has been declared
and Cardinals and Chickadees celebrate.

To write or not to write
is no longer the question.
That was answered long ago.
The questions why, where, when, and how
are of only slight import.
No – now the question that looms large is
“Write what?”
and the answer begins with noticing.
