Now And Then

It’s just for now that

 dark clouds hover. Tomorrow

sun will fill the sky.

 Can we find a way

to live both with and beyond

such changing weather?

From These Bits And Pieces

To make this crazy

quilt of a life I gather

what I can and stitch,

 moment by moment, these small

 fragments  into a

pieced together whole, hoping

this irregular,

unskilled offering will be

enough to keep a body warm.

A Matter Of Choice

With just the slightest

twitch of an eyebrow, Toby

surveys several

grazing deer, weighs his options,

decides he’d rather

catch z’s than chase fleeing deer

 – an excellent model for me.

Fall Preview

It won’t be long now

before the school year begins

and summer’s pleasures

will be replaced with early

rising, lost text books,

missed buses, feigned illnesses,

and parental hair-pulling.

Midday Visitor

It was the quiet

at midday that took me back

to another time.

Absence, rather than presence,

opened memory’s

door and let, not an image

but a feeling, slip right in.

As Above So Below

The day begins with

both hummingbirds and blue jays,

givers and takers,

an avian study in

our human proclivities.

Basic Training

Apparently we,

and not the dogs, were sent to

obedience school

where we learned to fetch food, throw

balls, and give treats on command.

Time Travel

Not so long ago

they sat at my dining room

table and we laughed

together at our mishaps

past and present. Their

chairs are empty now and I

sit alone, but their stories

and their laughter linger still.

Not Even The Dog

Not even the dog

likes these dog days of summer.

He paws at the door

pronouncing his displeasure

with this Virginia weather.

A Prayer For The Morrow

I’ve always liked happy endings,

what others have

called unlikely,

even mushy.

And that’s the way I want to take

my leave, waving

jauntily as

the sweet sun sets.

I want to hallow my many

diminishments

with laughter and

a song of thanks,

Seeing in them an opening

as well as a

closing, a chance

to learn anew.
