Angled truth, like sun
in early morning, can both
illuminate and blind.

Before the long night
descends, I reflect upon
the constancy of
sky-tied moon and stars even
when their once bright light grows dim.

Take one small house, add
two teen girls and one preteen.
Mix with two large dogs.
Stir in one quiet-craving
grandmother. Simmer
briefly. Add a dash of cold
weather. Let sit. Serves no one.

The tune was catchy
and before I knew it, I
was caught – nabbed by a
repetitious melody,
bound by a steady
beat. No use trying to get
free – I’ll sing myself to sleep.

Frost covered hills rest
undisturbed until crows give
just cause for complaint.

So – in America we have newscasts
on how best to
respond if
we’re caught
in
a
public
shooting, but
not on what to
do if held hostage by the gun lobby.

The place was pretty
enough and well-kept. The day
was blue-sky sunny
and the temperature just right –
yet a palpable
melancholy soon settled
in, hinting of dark
secrets time could not erase
nor cosmetics conceal.

That garden angel,
gift from a beloved friend,
sits behind glass in
my terrarium, watching
over all who enter here.

From the dark a plaintive owl
replies,”Who? Who? Who?”.
