found a way to coexist

All eyes are upon
me as they eagerly watch,
hoping for some small
morsel of food, not wisdom,
to fall their four-legged way.

Even the sky cried –
silent witness to the clouds
of war hovering
over us as we proclaim,
“Peace on earth, goodwill toward men.”

Rage is all the rage
these days. Perhaps if we just
refuse to buy it,
with time and a bit of luck,

countless acts of kindness that

because orders, at last, ceased.

I look out upon restful pines
and a pond silently shimmering
in the sun and my thoughts turn
to life’s other light-filled shimmerings.

The apple doesn’t
fall far from the tree. After
being told by school
officials that she must wear
a skirt or dress on
days her basketball team played,
my almost six-foot,
pants-loving granddaughter did
exactly what she
was told and paired her long skirt
with matching basketball shoes.

Looking back I see
what I couldn’t see then – how
small I was and how
big the task. Sometimes it is
ignorance that sees
us through. We don’t know how or
why or when. We just begin.
