First day of first job.
Grouchy curmudgeon
can’t forgive her small mistake,
demands refund, storms out.
She shrinks.
Kind witness says, ” You did great.
That guy’s a jerk.”
She grows.
Some lessons learned.

We humans insist
on giving small answers to
very big questions.

Right now
I release
mind chatter –
pain over what is no longer,
worry over what might come.
Right now
I embrace
what I see –
sunlight dancing on rolling hills,
cows grazing contentedly.

Strange green creatures made
of leaves sit, eyes glittering,
among rain-soaked trees.

As you step forward
to receive your diploma
and into the next
phase of your life, I have no
words of wisdom or
sage advice. What I have is
a memory of
wisdom you imparted long
ago when you were
just in kindergarten. Your
younger sister had
made a mistake and you took
her hand and said, ” That’s
ok, Sami. You’re little
and you’re learning.” In the years
to come, may you find comfort
and encouragement
in your own wise words as both
your sister and I have done.

What we try to teach
and what they finally learn
often don’t equate.

Things are tidy now.
The median has been cleared
of perennial
volunteers. Still, I’m glad they
had a week to meet and greet.

That mail box stands
wide open.
Is it agape
at what it received
or is it just hungry
for something more?

He took one look at
my shopping cart and seeing
the heavy bag of
birdseed precariously
placed, that unknown man
bent down and repositioned
it, nodded, and walked
away – a small kindness that
set right an off balance day.

Not sunny, but not
rainy either – one of those
non definitive,
Spring days -great for learning how
to go with whatever is.
