Not sunny, but not
rainy either – one of those
non definitive,
Spring days -great for learning how
to go with whatever is.

So many hours pass
and the talk I mostly hear
comes from my own head.

That jay didn’t need super delegates,
pay-to-play backers,
or even Debbie Wasserman Schultz
to proclaim one-jay rule
in this backyard jayocracy.

The many storied
lives we lead can result in
strange works of fiction.
Lured by this lore, we might miss
the truth stored in the basement.

I can’t choreograph the birds,
who comes and when,
how long they stay.
All I can do is
lay down the seed,
chase away the cat,
and watch and wait.
Still, I find myself wishing
the tufted titmouse might linger,
the cardinal would move just a little to the right,
those jays wouldn’t put up such a fight.
Someday, I hope to simply sit
and watch both myself and them
with uncorrective curiosity.

That elusive pause – the time to stop, to
take a few breaths,
to assess
if the
path
I’m
about
to take is
the one I should
tread. Will it take me where I want to go
and will I be
the kind of
person
I
want
to be
as I walk
the path ahead,
be it an easy one or one that’s rough?

I plan, I reflect,
I tell myself stories,
I remember,
I get lost.
I circle back to times past
or travel to tomorrowland,
but sometimes an unexpected stillness comes
and I find myself right here, right now,
awake and at rest.

Against all odds, we found it,
a dress we both adore.
When an eighteen year old
and one past seventy
finally agree on anything,
especially on a dress,
you’ve got something really special.
You’ve got nothing less than a miracle.

It just takes a slight
promise of sun to brighten
the gloom of the day –
another reminder that
neither gold nor gray can stay.

During a pause on
this rain-soaked afternoon, three
hungry jays vie for
dining rights amidst a gang
of single-minded,
acrobatic squirrels and
one tiny tufted
titmouse – a backyard drama
rivaling the best
of political combat
and reality t.v.
