This ninety degree
day, juniper trees weighted
with pale blue berries
defy the heat, remind us
to prepare for Winter’s cold

Wouldn’t it be great
if there were a buyers’ guide
to help us determine
which of our many ideas
we should buy?
Oh wait – maybe that’s what
those ancient, sacred writings
were designed to do.

I told Knox I was
too tired to play, but he had
other ideas.
“You throw. I’ll fetch and soon you’ll
see how happy we’ll both be.”

Droplets from the sky
visit the welcoming pond
and they blend right in.

No camouflage here –
that vibrant red cardinal
makes his presence known,
but the other birds at the feeder
seem unimpressed.

is take the sadness
into your heart and rock.
There’s nothing to say
and nothing else to do –
there’s just you and sadness
and a slow and gentle rock.

After days of warmth
a chill set in. It won’t be long
before it’s warm again.
Isn’t that the way things go?
Nothing lasts forever.
JDG
I don’t know how it all started,
and I don’t know how it will end,
but those two crows are going at it,
each determined to have the last caw.
Not far away, hummingbirds feed
and robins sing.

On a dark and rainy night
they guided me home,
those two guardian angels
in human form –
my vigilant son and grandson.

I’m almost glad the honeysuckle has come back.
It covers the branches of the tree
I stripped it from two years ago.
I didn’t know then the branches would stay bare,
that no new growth would come.
Now, once more, honeysuckle and juniper coexist
and what was bare is covered with
a sweet smelling blanket of white and green.
