Blue sky and white clouds,
bachelor buttons and Queen Anne’s lace
join together and sing
a summer song of splendor.
Won’t you sing too?

Changed my tactics.
Stopped tugging with Knox.
Held out an open hand.
Knox dropped his toy

Outside my window
there’s a frenzy of flying things:
wasps and bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

an unexpected, gently
spreading calm has grown.

calm’s presence even
there and learning to root myself
in the settled spaces in between.

its watchful mother by its side:
an old and sacred story.

at that squirrel sprawled out on
the porch rail. What’s up?
For us, so much depends on
the story we tell ourselves.
