Just when I congratulate myself
for finally getting them right,
I make another error.
Still, I’ll keep on trying.

That eagle soared low
in front of my car.
Maybe he wanted me to know
though I could drive,
he could fly.

That skunk and I were
both relieved when my car
failed to hit him,
making it less likely
he would need to raise a stink.

Knox took one small step
toward the sleeping cats and then
thought better of it.
It’s not only sleeping dogs
that it is best to let lie.

Among the tangled
strands of my bewildered mind,
a clear thought emerged –
an outlier to be sure,
but one struggling to be heard.

Trying to be true
to the commitment I made
to write a poem each day,
but it gets really hard when
I have nothing I want to say.

Knox brings me his ball,
peers up at me, tail wagging.
I say I’m busy
with important human stuff.
Tail still wagging, he rolls his eyes.

Not ones to stand on ceremony,
Bachelor Buttons
and Black-eyed Susans
extend warm summer greetings
to all passersby.

In no time at all, then becomes now
as mother and daughters reminisce,
adding this very moment
to their storehouse
to later bring out and share.
