Without caring hands
to plant, feed, and water them,
wildflowers still
find a way to flourish and
to bloom, brightening
unlikely places with their
own uncultivated charm.

A water snake slides
across the pollen covered
pond as fish peer up
and birds look down. On the dock
a child sits, her pole raised.

Caught in the tangled
web of my thoughts, I struggle
to get free. Sometimes
though, I can see the web is
of my own making
and, after taking a breath,
I relax and just let be.

No branch swayed, no leaf
stirred as the earth held its breath
this warm spring morning

Pulling back the night,
the birds sang the moon toward home
bringing forth the sun

Saw my first bachelors today,
their buttons shining brightly in the sun.
Right now they’re few in number,
but others will come soon
and they’ll dance among the daisies
beneath a honeysuckle moon.

A sudden flash of purple blossoms
and a burst of birdsong
brought me back
from the place to which my thoughts
had led. A door opened.
Leaving my thoughts behind,
I passed on through.

Ever since I set
my GPS to “off road”,
hoping to avoid
interstates, my grandson has
taken great delight
in asking how many creeks
I forded, what woods
I crossed and how many fields
I roamed on my long way home.

The light streams in these west facing windows
as the day comes slowly to a close.
For a time we’re held in lingering light
as the sun’s parting kiss
prepares us for the coming dark
and promises a warm return.

Sometimes when I write,
some unknown hand grabs my pen
and before I know
it, adds a word, a phrase, a
twist that leads the piece
off in a direction all
its own and I’m left agape.

One voice says “stop”, another, “go”;
one says “yes”, the other, “no”.
Round and round and round they go
and when they’ll stop, I don”t know.
I guess it’s time for a referee –
someone far more wise than me.
Perhaps he (or is it she?)
will come up with something
and they’ll agree.
