Day lilies trumpet
summer’s heated arrival.
Pond brings promised cool.

Even the crows grow
silent on this summer day.
Only the bees play.

Two weeks of unwashed
clothes, mosquito bitten limbs,
and a longing for
all things electronic came
home with her from camp
today. It won’t be long ’til
tales of near misses,
narrow calls, triumphs shared, friends
made, and friends lost arrive too.

Wild beauty makes a long drive short as
sun slants fire
and gray haze
slowly
lifts.

That weeping willow’s
been in grief so long her green
tresses touch the ground.

Every year they come,
those baby bunnies, and peek
from beneath her hair.

Firefly nights and honeysuckle days –
it doesn’t get
much better
than this.
On
hills
of green
cattle graze
and I graze too
on summer’s sweet spread of simple delight.

No yellow buses.
Thyme creeps over flattened stones,
fills empty spaces.

Fireflies signal
night’s slow approach as children
dash for empty jars.

Sitting on the riverbank, I
watch my thoughts float
by. I’ve learned at
last to follow
them and I rest content. Then
somehow, someway,
somewhy, somewhen,
I find that I
have plunged on in after them
and together
we are carried
far out to sea.

There is no poem
in this, I thought, but then I
thought again. Maybe
one lurks even here and can
bring pleasure amidst the woe.

I do nothing and they appear
each and every
year, their golden
faces tilted
in the sun, their black eyes aglow.
Joined by other
rooted friends, they
beckon bees and
hummingbirds, butterflies, and me
to linger for
a season til
they have to go.

Sudden slant of sun
pierces through evening’s gray
– wishing it could stay
~~~
After evening rain
a rising mist made golden
by the setting sun
~~~
Rain, shine, night and day
the persistent twittering
of a blocked air vent
