I’m definitely aware I’m part of
the human race.
I’m always
racing
here
and
there and
everywhere,
but it’s really
just a human being I long to be.

I usually shun
gray days, but not this one. I’ve
come, after days of
unrelenting heat and bright
sun, to a new-found
appreciation for gray
and its manifestations.

I have made a pact with the universe
to take, again and again,
the hard rocks of
regret,
harsh judgement,
anger and fear
down to the vast ocean of love
and let the waves
tumble them smooth. Then,
I’ll gather them up,
string them together,
and wear them like jewels.

Moving into my new office, I was sad.
I knew I’d miss my friends
the birds who visited regularly,
perching on my second story window ledge,
nesting in nearby holly trees.
But
the word went out
and they came here: robins,
sparrows, cardinals, jays –
the old gang- and even though
I have no trees, I have
a ground floor window ledge
where they still visit me.

Inner and Outer
sometimes conspire. Today,
as a gentle breeze
softly ruffles sun-lit leaves,
a blue heron stands
looking out upon the pond.
Inner and outer,
blue heron and leaves, whisper
together, bringing forth ease.
JDG
Grey mist slowly sweeps across the pond, now
grown still beneath
its silver
touch. Crows
call
out
(with what
intent, we
do not know) but
as the sun slides upward, the mist moves on,
leaving behind
no sign it
ever
was.
Would
our own
presence here
right now could be
as innocent and leave as little trace.

On the Fourth I took
the fifth or at least consumed
one. Post firework
traffic needed many means
to quench my flaming ire.

From Billy Collins
I learned I am younger than
Cheerios. I step
with a lighter foot knowing
that. Cheerio, dear Billy.

Winter doesn’t know
anything comes after it,
yet Spring always comes.

Not knowing how can’t
be enough to hold us back.
We’ll learn as we go.

Watching myself pay
attention first to this, then
to that, I see where
I stop the flow. It’s right here
where the flow is blocked
that I am at the very
edge of learning something new.
