If there’s one thing sweltering heat teaches
it’s to slow down,
take a break,
drink deep,
let
things
unfold,
take pleasure
in small tasks well
done, cherish breezes – whoops that’s six not one.

Roads don’t always take us
where we meant to go.
Paul didn’t know when
he started out for Damascus
he’d have to go blind
before he could see. How
do we know when a road
is just a road and not our destiny?

When the winds of fear
howl long and fierce, I seek refuge
in poetry and place.
Sheltered there, for a time,
heart and soul find peace.

Chaos and sad songs,
anger and fear – what awaits
when they drop away?
That page has not been written.
Those images aren’t yet here.

Turkey vultures stand,
wings folded, along that fence
looking, not at us,
but at something we can’t see.
Nearby, cows graze unperturbed.

I crave a shiftless
Saturday when all work is
set aside, no
errands need be run, and I
can simply sit, sigh, and see.

One day I refuse to act on
a suggestion
that could ease my
tension, even
solve a problem. The next day I
decide to act.
What’s the difference
between one day
and the next? The difference lay
not in the day
but in me and
my willingness.

Toby’s literally in the clover
as he gazes
out upon
his world.
From
his
perch he
views birds, bees,
and butterflies
and, on reflection, pronounces them – good.

Small branches strewn over yard and road speak
of a storm now
gone. Sometimes
big winds
bring
much
noise, great
motion yet
leave only scant
signs of their very unsettling blast.

Past this battering
barrage stands a tree of light.
Its golden roots run
deep, its branches try to touch
the sun. There I’ll take my rest.
