Nobody told me writing is much more
than what it seems.
Nobody
told me
it
could
open
my eyes, set
me on firm ground,
alter my perspective, and save my life.

Small purple flowers,
tiny dancing leaves – what else
is up this day’s sleeve?
Could it be those butterflies
who stayed away too
long? Now joined by hummingbirds
and bumblebees, they
circle ‘round that purple bush
swaying in the morning sun.

Sunflowers beam through
days of rain, soaking up clouds’
continuous tears
~
In the night did some
stars fall, scattering their light
across morning’s ground?

I haven’t even
finished the introduction
and already she’s
brought me to my knees, grateful
that altars can be
found everywhere, even here,
even when I’ve little faith.

(in appreciation of her book, An Altar In The World)
It isn’t weighty tomes or lofty thoughts
that pull me through.
It’s that small
blue-tailed
skink
whose
porch I
share, the dog
who joins me there,
and the questioning of a distant owl.

Those crows are sounding
off again, but even they
call forth a grin.

It’s a strange quiet
really, one filled with outside
sounds and inside peace.

“What is saving your life right now?”she asks,
giving me pause.
Just now, wings
aglow,
that
small
bird seized
my sadness
and flew away,
leaving behind a momentary peace.

A greater wisdom
took me in hand, over-ruled
all shoulds and coulds, shut
the door on an active day,
and nestled me in
a comfy chair with pen, books,
and tea nearby. I
wasn’t ill, but I was sick
of days packed with busyness.

With no sun in sight,
soft rain extends dawn’s misty
gray, slowly blending
it with many other hues –
an August watercolor.

End of July rains
bring a welcome change after
sweltering heat. So
too can tears bring much needed
relief to anger-baked hearts.
