I never learned to walk in the dark.
I want to learn now.
When I was little, I lay alone at night,
afraid of monsters and ghosts,
wondering what would become of me,
what would become of those I loved.
I never learned to walk in the dark.
I want to learn now.
I hid myself away, seeking out closets
where I could lie still,
thinking if I were just still enough,
trouble would pass on by.
I never learned to walk in the dark.
I want to learn now.

I don’t know who is
more panicked, that deer or I,
as we look up and
see each other. I slow down;
she speeds up and we’re in luck.

In that space between what was said and what
was heard lies a
chasm or
a bridge.
A
look,
a tone,
a simple
gesture can tell
us whether to don parachute or shoes.

Denial can’t
make what’s
crooked straight.
First we
must look
at what’s
really here.

Not an about-face,
but a small turning nonetheless,
sets a different course,
alters our habitual
path and takes us somewhere new.

Outdone by grand flashes from above,
the fireflies retreat,
saving their light
for another night.
Soon other elemental forces
click in and they’re out
signaling for a mate again.

Heads tucked between their paws, our two dogs sleep.
Wiser than we,
they know when
to call
it
quits,
to give
themselves and
their many tasks
a rest, to spend some time among their dreams.

Amidst the cacophony of crows
and the bluster of barnyard geese
a single sparrow sings,
adding its sweet voice
to the moment’s harsh melody.
Even if no one is listening
or its voice is overcome by shriller birds,
the sparrow knows to keep on singing anyway.

Not some day
Today
