In the almost dark
before night falls, in the not
quite light before day
breaks, there is a letting go
and a step toward what will be.

Some suggestions, I’ve learned,
are best kept to oneself –
like the one I made recently
to my grandchildren.
“Let’s come up with some goals
for one another,” I said,
and they eagerly got to work on mine.
“Be brief, be calm, be patient, be respectful,
keep an even tone, stay on topic,” they intoned,
to which I silently added,
“When making such suggestions
be prepared for straight talk
and have ready a brief, but snappy, comeback.”

Gray fog silently creeps over hills, slides
across winding
roads, sharpens
vision,
cuts
through
inner
morning fog,
helps us see with
greater clarity what may lie ahead.

If insight alone
could cure, I’d be almost done.
Alas, some action
is required too and there’s
the rub. No mental
massage can take the place of
daily practice in
the world and to that I have
only this to say – “Ah Shucks!”

It’s easy to get
lost on this road so well-known,
so often traveled
that I miss the way the sun
and shadows play as
bachelor buttons come and go
and those black-eyed susans dance.

As the years go by
and she looks back, she see things
differently. Though her
sight has worsened, her vision
has grown tender and more clear.

Tied to these rolling
hills and bound by gratitude,
I’m set strangely free.

Even in the rain
those sunflowers insist they
have the right to shine.

A child sings me
into wakefulness. Morning
sun plays hide and seek
among the clouds. Hungry dogs
and cats and kids nudge
me out of bed – unsubtle
hints it’s time to rise and shine.

Going down my list
of things to do, I realized
I’d left out some things
as I often do. How could
I forget to add
looking at the stars, basking
in the sun, singing
silly songs, savoring ripe
tomatoes, offering thanks?

After heavy rains
a riot of lavender,
deep purple and gold
erupted upon the scene,
claimed their right to summer sun.
