When multiple moons
glowed through our hotel window,
I knew we had to
cut back on Texas moonshine.
Soon I was relieved
to find those many moons weren’t
Texas excess. They
were simply shining orbs from
a nearby parking garage.

Skittering between
the multitude of those quite
convincing tales I
tell myself about how things
should and shouldn’t be,
I can’t see why the higher
powers won’t listen to me.

It’s just flow and foam
up here where all straight edges
disappear and I’m
left peacefully to drift in
seamless, shifting space.
Being up in the air leaves
drawing lines to those on ground.

Embers still glow where
the ever-shifting flames of
enthusiasm
once danced. There’s heat enough here
to carry us through the night.

I was invited
to go a whole day without
complaining once. I
graciously declined because
of previous commitments.

In the light drizzle,
tucked behind the cloud-covered sky,
the sun still shines.
This we know by science and by faith.
For this and for many other things
apparent but unseen,
we offer thanks.

No use trying to
avoid this melancholy
river running just
below the surface. Best to
dive in and see where
it takes me, what it has for
me to see, to learn, to know.

He has a gentle way of shifting my focus
to include not just me
but also others
who have their own
struggles,
dreams,
and fears.
With this second look
my heart opens
and compassion comes
both for myself
and the other.
Now, if only I could get
this shift to stay
longer than a minute
this and every day.

A giant spool turns
counterclockwise winding thread.
From a shade-less lamp
an odd-shaped bulb gives light.
A large bell clangs once.
What is one to make of such
images in last night’s dreams?

When I first heard her say,”This is something
up with which I
will not put,”
I thought
she
paid
too much
attention
to the don’t end
a sentence with a preposition rule.
Later I learned
she enjoyed
making
fun
of
those rules
dreamed up by
some folks with
more time on their hands than brains in their heads
