Sitting here before
the sun wakes up and the moon
goes to bed, I too
am in an in between place
after stop, before
go. Until I get more clear,
I guess it’s best to move slow.

Many voices of silence fill our days –
the hushed waiting
for the baby or the bride,
the sharp intake of breath
at the slam of a door,
the easy quiet
between old friends,
the awed silence
before nature’s swell,
the pained pause
following words wrongly spoken,
the wordless prayer
for the well-being of others,
the inaudible sigh
at work well done,
the too-long lull
after a last breath,
the spacious expanse
of a stilled pond, a calm mind.

Emily Walls Ray's Light and laughter
For more than a year six women met in a quiet room and wrote our lives in poetry. The result is a new poetry book entitled Room For Poetry. The poems are arranged seasonally, reflecting the life events such as birth, death, job loss, glimpses of wisdom, redemption, and moments of pure joy. Illustrations by Glenda Kotchish add to the beauty of this lovely little book. Poets include Yvonne Campbell, Joan Garrabrant, Glenda Kotchish, Sarah Posey, Emily Walls Ray, and Jane Holliday Wilson.

Now that Thanksgiving
is past and Christmas is nigh,
I guess the stores will
skip Valentine’s Day and go
straight to the fourth of July.

Feed the hungry? Clothe
the poor? What do you take us
corporations for?
People with large hearts of gold?
How will that help our
bottom line, our investors.
and ourselves get the
heaven we’ve been striving for?
That’s what the Supreme Court’s for.

Sometimes the only way I can go forward
is to go back
to that moment just before
I left myself behind.
Taking myself by the hand, we walk,
that left-behind self and me,
through the past until we stand
before Future’s door
and open it together.

Just to show her gratitude, our cat brought
a mouse for our
Thanksgiving
feast and
seemed
put
out by
our failure
to show proper
appreciation for her offering.

In the winter rain
cedar, juniper, and pine
shine amidst trees grown brown or
bare – tall sentinels
of green against a bleak and
barren sky. Perhaps
snow will come, perhaps it won’t
but we know these trees
will hold their green no matter
what the day or season brings.

At a loss for words,
I ask my granddaughters for
some help. “What should I
write about?” I ask and they
reply, “How about
how wonderful we are or
how the moon reflects
upon the pond or the snow
that’s on the way?” I
consider each suggestion
carefully and then
settle on this unspoken
one for which I find the words.

Let us look today
to those who have shown us how
to move forward when
faced with discrimination,
injustice, and hate.
Let the words of Mandela,
Gandhi, and King call
us to combat violence with
a stronger response,
one infused with thoughtful care
and focused intent,
one that will truly lead to
liberty and justice for all.
May we not lose heart.
