Though in the moment
the turning’s slow and we can’t
see the lengthening
of day, the diminishment
of night, we take heart.
Other turnings too have been
inexorable and slow.

Everywhere I go
it seems I’m directed by
either kids or crows.
Toby’s the only one who
still has full faith in
me and sometimes even he
looks a tad askance
as I slowly weave my way
through the contours of the day.
JDG
Not in the heat of the moment,
but later, when
the fire’s banked
and the smoke’s cleared,
before warmth and light fade away
leaving only
memories and
ashes grown grey,
let us turn to each other and
in the gentle
glow of embers
begin to talk.
JDG
Things have come to a strange pass when what brings
comfort is a
twittering
air vent,
but
I
remind
myself it’s
much like other
quite unlikely things from which sweetness springs.
JDG
Those crows don’t hold
back or hem and haw. For them
life’s just one big caw.
~
When Toby dogsplained
a gentler way, I swear I
saw them shake with glee.
~
Cats and crows on this
agree, Toby’s approach is
a dog mystery.

After dogs and cats
are fed, but before the kids
begin to stir, We
sit, my soul and I, and for
a time, converse. Though
time is short and there’s much to
say, it’s the silence we seek.
JDG
I definitely met my match today
when I told my
granddaughter
her first
car
should
be an
armoured one.
She laughed and said,
“Spoken by someone with an armoured view.”
JDG
Today I choose not to fight
or even argue with myself,
nor will I try to chase
unwelcome thoughts away.
Today I’ll simply sit and make some space
for whatever comes.
I’ll listen closely to what is said
and try not to be put off
by the manner of discourse
because hidden underneath
there could be something
I really need to know.
JDG
Sitting discretely
across the room in Five Guys
while my granddaughter,
now fourteen, celebrates her
birthday with a beau
of the same age, I reflect
on their obvious
enjoyment of each other
and their total lack
of self-consciousness though she
is five eleven
and he no more than five five.
Their relationship
has endured over time and
her change of schools. It
could serve as a model for
more “adult” relationships.
JDG
When we’re up against
it, taking the long view is
not the first thing that
springs to mind. Just getting through,
around or by is
the filter through which we see,
the portal through which we flee.
