Raindrops to snowflakes,
snowflakes to raindrops – it just
takes a few degrees
and the shift is made – gloom to
wonderment and back –
How fluid are such changes
and what a difference they make.

Sheltered by these hills
as the year draws to a close,
I turn and face my regrets.
I ask myself for forgiveness
and another chance.

There’s no going back though we wish there were.
We can’t undo
or redo
the past
but
what
we can
do is this –
we can be here
now with open hearts. What more can we ask?

Estimated time
between a request to take
the dogs out and a
nod of agreement? About
one minute. The time
the dogs actually leave?
Anywhere from ten
minutes to an hour. How
long dogs are walked? Three
minutes. Times I count to ten?
Too numerous to mention.

How did Jane Austen
do it, I wonder. Writing
whole books in the midst
of family life? It’s all I
can do to squeeze out this poem.

After a slow slide
into an unhappier
time, I grabbed the rope
of now and bit by
bit pulled myself up and out
of the abyss I’d
fallen into. That rope is
always there if we but reach.

After days of rain
the sun burst forth on Christmas,
filling us with light.

Even in the rain
our spirits soar as we share
songs and memories.

As the tree blinks on
and off, Toby gives a start.
Something strange is here.

Gazing upon the
remnants of gift openings,
I become unrapt.

If I had it to
do all over, I wouldn’t
because to pull just
one small thread would unravel
the whole. It could have
been more artfully fashioned,
less nubby and more
elegantly done, but this
is the cloth of the
life I’ve been weaving with all
the thread and skill I possess.

Every now and then everything goes right.
Red lights turn green
and parking
spaces
are
there
for the
taking. Not
wanting to be
teflon for the positive, I give thanks.
