Whine And Shine

For some reason I’ve

tuned into BNN  (Bad

News Network). Today’s

focus is bad poetry.

A few examples follow.

~

Irascible me

waits and watches for something

to make a big deal

about. I don’t have to wait

long. Vigilance pays off.

~

No edifying

reading for me, no self-help

DVDs, podcasts,

exercise tips, or improved

eating plans. I just

want to sit around and whine

which, right now, feels quite sublime.

~

When grouchiness comes

and stirs a pot brim full of

out-of-sortsness spiked

with the whine of nothing suits,

it might be time to

get another recipe,

switch cooks, or decline to eat.

A Rewrite

When all else fails, you

can try to write a poem

and make rhythm from

 cacophony, order from

chaos, fun from frustration.

(On this Easter Sunday, I pondered how
children seemed to be born knowing
how to celebrate, and how many of us seem
to lose that precious gift along the way.
This poem was first posted here
July 8th, 2014. A blessed celebration of
life to all.)

SHE WHIRLED BEFORE ME

She whirled before me, guileless,
eager face straining for the sky,
light rain chiseling a smile
glorious on glistening cheeks.
She extended her arms full-length
in opposite directions, flat palms
and feathery fingers seemingly
practiced in the art of soaring.
Moments before, she broke loose
from the boughs of my umbrella,
to announce an eight-year-old’s vision
and credo: I gotta be free!

Longing to join the gambol
but hobbled by an arthritic hip
and the rust of years given
to caution and conformity, I settle
for silence and reverent awe
in the presence of this young
priestess and her…

Turkeys Everywhere

Will the real turkey

please step forward? Was it me

slamming on the brakes

so suddenly? Was it that

long-necked bird crossing

the road so leisurely,

or was it that chagrined man

following so close behind?

A Natural Question

If this seemingly

barren ground can bring forth new

life, then can’t we look

for renewal too and hold

vigil for our own greening?

Undaunted

On such a sunny

day, it’s hard to focus on

all that once was grey.

Though a struggle it may be,

some of us will find a way.

In The Pink

After holding things

in while temperatures rose

and fell, those cherry

trees finally had enough

and burst forth in Spring-pink song.

Spring Claims

Slowly turning green,

a scattering of yellow –

early claims of Spring.

March Madness

As April nears, March

wants to have its last words still

ringing in our ears

as we open our arms to

April’s more colorful ways.

Spring Training

First Forsythia

endured the sudden burst of

cold and continued

smiling. Though it may grow cold,

we can learn to smile too.
