When past and present
coalesce,
we enter
a different dimension
just the other side of time.

As much as we don’t
like feeling confined, sometimes
it’s best to remain
within the lines – a guide some
restless drivers undermine.

Today I drive toward a horizon of
light. If I were
driving the
other
way
I’d head
toward a sky
still streaked in gray.
Changing position changes what we see.

Without warning we’re
connected again and for
a moment I don’t
miss you because you’re right here.
Then, even in that
same moment, I know you’re
forever gone and
I’m left with an aching
mix of greeting and goodbye.

Starting from here, I
finally made my way to
there and still was lost.

When that swoop of red
met that swoop of blue amidst
a field of white, I
wondered if we were in for
a patriotic
fight, but that cardinal and jay
formed a more perfect
union. They pecked not at each
other but at seed discovered.

Done in and undone
by this blast of snow… the truth
is I was simply
done until the sun arrived,
and began a slow
undoing of what the storm
had so fiercely tried to do.

As snow drifts downward
kids’ spirits soar – a no-school
Monday lies in store.
