My absent-minded granddaughters
are so upset with me
and for what reason
I really fail to see.
As they headed out the door
on this icy morn,
I did my granny thing
and asked,
not even plaintively,
“Remembered to wear shoes?”
– and, oh, the scorn.

of hearts or bunnies or flags or pumpkins.
Take it down, my lazy bumpkins.

Simple rituals
start and end the day – morning
coffee, evening wine.

Incomplete gestalts,
pauses pregnant
with what’s not yet
said, leave
us poised on
possibilities’
narrow

right

Finally having
come to earth, that snow is quite
reluctant to go.

“Humans!” that horse seemed
to snort, gazing at the road
as we drove by. “There

their rolling boxes,
nodding wisely and speaking
knowingly of horse
power. No wonder the world
is in such dubious shape!”
