Jay chases Cardinal
Cardinal chases squirrel. The cat
waits, ready to pounce.
Dog barks. All flee. The drama
ends fast…and happily.

Undisturbed, the pond
reflects sky, trees, and soaring
birds and if you pause
to look you’ll also glimpse what
lies just below the surface.

Not one to hold back,
that Blue Jay let me know,
in no uncertain terms,
that weekend or no weekend,
he didn’t expect
to wait all day
for his meal
to be placed before him.

At this very moment when all is well
in my small world,
may I not
shoplift
from
that
vast store
of other
times and other
places when my small world was out of joint.

Hidden and unsought,
her unattended heart grew
weaker every day.

In relationships
of any kind, when the old
“us” is no longer
working, we can open up
and begin the hard
work of becoming aware
of who each of us
has become and start to form
a new, evolving
“us” from the reality
of who we currently are.

On those days when my focus
is on the hole
in the doughnut
and not on the deliciousness all around,
may I gently
climb out of that hole,
and seeing more wholly, feast.

All along the road
tiny bits of sun came down,
took root, and grew. On
overcast mornings like these,
I’ll borrow some light from them.

One stately heron
Stands amid gaggling geese,
Isolated, bless his heart,
A liberal in Dixie.
