Out here among the trees
time is measured by the sun,
by the comings and goings of butterflies,
by the arrival and departure of birds,
by the waning and waxing moon,
by the slow shift of seasons.

and even the rats haven’t learned to race.
Out here among the trees
I slowly settle into place.

light sometimes springs
and words again begin to dance.

They always talked
in riddles and this
was just another one
until one day,
without my trying,
it was done.

of five, three,
five – and then I’m done.

If the haiku seems
way too long,
try this shorter form.

Old fears faced and gone,
she laughs and sings a new song
on the drive back home.

Above and below
bits of blue and wisps of white
fill us with delight.

In the big picture
it’s almost always the small
things that matter most.
