“Wait and see,” they say,
but I don’t even know what
to be looking for.

Were they singing hymns
to the day or complaining
about the weather,
those birds this morning? Though not
united, their voice was strong.

The sun, holding nothing back, casts its light
on all below
and we give
thanks, but
when
glare
blinds and
heat grows strong
we are grateful
for soft clouds and their gentle tempering.

the day, the day seized me. Did
it not hear me say
I was master of my fate
and the captain of my soul?

Facing the chasm
we ourselves dug, we are brought
up short. We must choose.
Do we walk away, holding
on to grievances
or do we look within, look
across and begin.
It won’t be easy. We’ll mess
up, but together
we can begin…and we do.
With memories, song,
and laughter we start to build
a bridge for crossing
and show our children and our
children’s children who we can be
