why I’m neither here nor there.

The day lies before me –
a blank page
upon which the Universe and I
will compose a poem.
My hand will hold the pen.
The Universe will provide the material.
Together
we will craft our offering.

In this constant din
how can we listen to that
still, small voice within?

“Sweltering” doesn’t
begin to cover it, and
who needs covering
anyway on a day as
incredibly hot as this.

Every successful
leap forward starts with a step
back, first to survey
what is and then to open
heart and mind to what could be.

When those old saws won’t
cut new wood, we might want to
find another way.

Pausing my program of complaint,
I listened
to an important message from
our sponsor:
“Weeping may endure for the night
but joy comes in the morning.”

Not everyone sees
the value of a weekend
spent in idleness,
a weekend where not one thing,
not even fun, is pursued.

Just for fun, I write.
Playing with images, words,
and ideas gives
me pleasure and if reading
them gives you pleasure
too, it’s like drinking the same
very good glass of wine twice.
