It wasn’t something
I planned to do, but I may
have finally stumbled
(some would say I was guided)
toward a path that I can walk.

So where do I start
after so many starts that
came to a sudden
stop? Begin where you are, they
say, and begin with
what you know. I’ll start here, right
now, sitting in my
chair. I’ll take my resistant
self in hand and start
blogging my path to fitness.

Why not? It helped me
develop a practice of
daily writing – one
poem a day for almost
six years. It could help
me not lose focus as I
begin once more on
this infernal journey. I
won’t start with any
promises. I’ll just begin
with fingers crossed and
with viewing some videos
for the woefully unfit.

Eighteen years ago
you came trailing clouds of glory.
Today I wish for
you many new trails to blaze.
May you be guided
by those clouds of glory in
the midst of life’s grit and shine.

Though I prefer to present
a smooth and polished surface,
it’s in the cracks and crevices
of my imperfect self
that love germinates and grows.

Is it divine ordering
or simply happenstance
when, against all odds,
things work out?
In the presence of such mystery,
I offer heartfelt thanks.

Thank you, Universe,
for letting me learn softly
from a big mistake.

Soaked in golden light
I stand at the close of a
worrisome day. So much to
fret about, so much
to do, but for this golden
moment, I’ll let it wash away.

That you can be
an idiot is clear to me.
That I can be one too
is more difficult to see.

What arises will fall away.
Such is the beating heart of the Universe.
May I take what each day brings
and from it shape an offering.
It will be rough and cracked and incomplete,
formed from all my yeses, all my noes,
and all my muddy maybes.
Universe, each day I give you me.

I watch as my mind
does a broad sweep, finds something
to worry about.
