Heading for the beach,
the five of us – three teens, one
midlifer and one
geriatric – lucky for
me, they’re all on their cell phones.

Tomorrow we’ll be
joined by one more teen and two
very young adults.
I’ll do then what any wise
elder would do – sip some wine.

On the seventh day I discover there’s
poetry in
practice as
well as
grit.

After the sun slips
beyond the horizon, but
before starlight fills
the sky, we stand and listen
as then and now and when call.

I know it’s not all
in my mind, but still I find
it strange, that in so
few days, with so little work,
I feel a whole lot better.

World,
what gifts will you bring me today?
May I
not turn anything you bring away.
And may I
offer my own small gifts to you.

Day five and I persist.
Who knows when this path will end
or even where it will take me?
What I do know is simply this:
it’s the path I’ve chosen.

All these years I’ve tried to fit in other
people’s clothes. It’s
time I found
and wore
my
own.
They’ll fit
my frame, both
body and mind
and I will slip them on and off with ease.

By now I’m usually done, but I’ve stuck
it out so far.
Exercise,
it
turns
out, is
not so hard
and it’s even
better that I can do it from my chair.

Nevertheless,
the Divine persists,
each moment offering
an invitation
to participate with
awareness
and an open heart.

Under the watchful
supervision of the dogs,
I make my way to
the mailbox and back. Toby’s
grateful for the trip.
Jimmy’s not so sure. I’m just
glad I have at last
begun this fitness journey
and I’m grateful for
whatever help I get – be it
dogs, humans, or videos.
