Some busy days, but
I made time today to do
what I didn’t do some days before.

On this blue-black night,
with only a single star in sight,
an unexpected peace descends.

When at last the mind
grows silent, a different kind
of listening can begin –
one not tuned to familiar loops
of word-filled chattering.

Slowly, softly, we begin to hear
the music
of spacious consciousness.

I don’t even know
what questions to ask. Perhaps
I’ll start by asking:
“What do you want me to know?”
I’m here and I’m listening.

Procrastinated
a bit, then simply smiled
and got on with it.

Each age has its task. The young step forward
as the old learn
to make room
and step
back.
Both
tasks are
hard; each has
its own reward,
and both benefit from self-compassion.
