Sometimes writing is
a life line I toss myself
to pull me ashore
when the waters I’m swimming
in grow rough and threatening.

Upset today by one more broken thing,
self-pity and
blame flooded
over
me.
I
can choose
to sink or
I can stretch to
float and feel the sun soothe my tender skin.

almost noon only to be

approaching in our car, just
kept on strolling down
the road in front of us ’til
he was ready to
move to a lawn near by. No
hurry, no worry,
alert with no agenda.

adopt? Granddaughter’s eyes roll.

Stately Bradford Pears
keep watch as pansies frolic
in the morning sun.

A sudden burst of bird song,
a lilting greeting from on high,
invites us to drop our weighty worries,
unfurl our wings, and fly.

I slip my moorings and let myself float,
for a time, in
waters grown
still at
last.
