Something there is about a mind

that doesn’t like to lie fallow.

From its fertile soil springs

all manner of confusing things.

If all goes well

cars slow down, deer speed up

when they chance to meet

on country roads.

I want to wrap my thoughts

in a cloud of unknowing

and sit with them for a while,

then, one by one,

I’ll unwrap them and see

what wrapping and unwrapping

can teach me.

The gritty whoosh of passing cars,

the stately silence of swaying trees,

carping crows readying for flight,

shifting clouds of white and gray –

this morning’s moving picture show.

Every day

they come

a little closer –

those deer.

I expect

to look up

soon and

see them

in my

living room.
