There was a moment
when I picked up that coffee cup
and moved it toward my mouth…
a brief moment,
but a moment nonetheless…
when I noticed a quiet satisfaction
and a seamless peace.

Behind those walls
of fire and ice
our vulnerability hides.
Let’s use fire’s warmth
to melt the ice
so the water of life
can freely flow.

Seeing them line up
on the empty porch rail
and face my window,
I got the point
and hurried out
with their accustomed bird seed.

Walking our familiar path,

discover new wonders –
a heartening harbinger
of the time ahead.

goodbye to the joys and ills
of the last decade.
May we embrace the lessons
learned and the blessings received.

Seeing the mind fall in love
with its own cleverness,
the heart heaves a sigh.

Out here
things move slow
and I know
I could move slow too.
I know
I could
slowly still
my self-created frenzy.

the doing.

Anxiety comes bursting in,
seizing the night,
turning it even darker
with harrowing tales
of what ifs and none
have happy endings.
Slowly, amidst the din,
I make out a gentle whisper.
“Count.” it says
“and with each number
name a blessing to remember”.
It takes willingness and time
but Anxiety and I are softly soothed
by a fuller story.

maybe they belong
to a different puzzle.

They sat together
without speaking,
each focused
on their own cell phone –
a modern family,
simultaneoulsy
present and absent
to each other.
