What we see when we look back depends not
on the past, but
on who we’ve
come to
be.

What we see when we look back depends not
on the past, but
on who we’ve

High among the branches
of a distant tree
rests a glowing
patch of red
with shimmering wings.
JDG
Such a tiny deer
crossing the road all alone,
no companions or
mother nearby – May it be
safe, May it find its way home.
JDG
An invisible force
casts a shimmering spell
and the trees begin to
wave and whistle.
Listening, the nearby pond
responds with winks and giggles.

We know he’s not a reader,
but if he had opened the book
he held tightly in his hands,
he might have come upon these words:
“Love the Lord, thy God with all thy heart,
and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”
and “Love thy neighbor as thyself.”
If he had taken those words to heart
the path before him would not
have been cleared with tear gas.
JDG
Ran out of birdseed,
couldn’t get to the store.
The birds are forgiving;
the squirrels not so much.

Morning sun shines its light on all below.
It does not pick
and choose. It
greets us
all.

If you feel yourself
start to sink and know you don’t
have the energy
to swim, just take a deep breath,
relax, and let yourself float.

The day breaks
grey except for
that red cardinal
waiting at
the feeding tray.
JDG
Toby and I pause
at the same tree.
I see lush leaves
filtering the morning sun.
He sniffs roots and bark
for signs of passersby –
Two walkers,
two very different walks.
