Looking around for
any available friend,
Knox spots a squirrel
and off he goes, dragging me
reluctantly behind him.

Knox and I stop by the woods
on a non- snowy evening and look up.
Things aren’t sparkling down here,
but up there? Sparkles everywhere!

Never say never
is an oxymoron if
I ever heard one,
but even oxymorons
can sometimes be of comfort.

When the snow
we were expecting
turns out to be rain,
the fire brings us
comfort just the same.

The past three days we’ve stepped outside
in a variety of garb –
short sleeved shirts and blouses,
slick rain apparel,
woolen scarves and winter coats.
Soon we might add snow boots
just to keep us on our toes.

A burst of sunlight
after a cold day of rain –
magic mood changer.

Today on my walk,
I spotted several dandelions
in full bloom and decided
I’d like them to be
my totem flower –
after all, it is December
in the year of Corona
and I could use some
of their indomitable spirit.

There is no greater gift
than being seen and valued
just as you are –
virtues, faults, foibles and all.

As the last leaves fall
and the wind whispers secrets
of increasing cold,
the holly trees remind us
of a hope that’s ever green.

Listening to those two sisters share
the day’s ups and downs,
offering each other
advice and comfort, I realized
they may have changed their names,
but their hearts remain the same.
