One breath in, one out.
Repeat for ten breaths.
You’re lucky.
No response is needed.
They’ve already moved on.

Am I any wiser
after seventy-eight years?
It depends on who you ask.

A few flakes of snow –
Knox looks perplexed. What is this
white stuff falling from the sky?
JDG
A mysterious flutter in the bushes –
Knox’s head comes up.
He stands erect,
watching, listening
before he moves on.
I can relax.
Knox says it’s ok.

I wonder what they think of us,
those squirrels and birds
who come to visit and stay to dine.
Do they think it strange
that we don’t join them
or do they just accept the fact
that that’s the way we humans are?
JDG
They slowly
let down their guard
after all these years
and saw and were seen
Finally, their hearts meet.

I watch my two cats
watch the mouse creep across the floor.
They have a vague interest, but not much more.
Catching mice isn’t out of their skill set, but
it seems they’ve been promoted to supervisor.

A late evening walk.
smell of woodsmoke, memories
of fire, family,
friends, cups of hot chocolate –
a deep comfort, sweet and warm.
JDG
Behind bare branches
the partial moon lights the sky.
I pause to look, but
Knox pulls me forward to see
what’s stirring in the bushes.
