At the opening
and closing of the day, they come,
leaving their woodland
home to leisurely graze, these
graceful, cautious visitors.

Clouds drift,
butterflies flutter,
hawks swoop,
squirrels scamper.
deer graze,
fountain bubbles,
hummingbirds flit,
pond ripples,
sun sets,
day ends.

Why feast on nectar
when there’s plenty of dog poop
along the roadside?

What dreams await
our sleepy heads,
I do not know,
but I pray they’re comforting,
inspiring and sweet.

When the door
slams shut,
it’s time to open
the windows
and climb out
unless you’re Knox,
then you just
stand there and bark.

This rainy morning
the sun briefly kissed the trees
and for a moment they glowed.

With Covid we’re masked
even in therapy
where we hoped
to feel safe enough
to name and remove them.
