Empty of motion,
the morning stillness had an
uneasy solid
feel until that bird drew me
to the spaces in between.

“Wos up?” that license
plate asked on a day when I
was down, but when I
saw those trees blooming full and pink,
I simply answered, “Beauty”.

We can focus on
the large surrounds of gray or
those few openings
where sun pours through or hold them
both in a much larger view.

Weathered mountain rock,
unexpectedly green – once
hidden beneath grass
and trees but now bare – mutely
speaks of man’s own drive for green.

Just what the issue
was, I’ll probably never
know, but judging from
the feathered flutter, it was
not a lilting matter.

I was as prepared
as I could be for the storm
that wasn’t. Is it
human nature to want at
least some lightning for my pains?

First one thing and then
another: morning warmed by
sun, evening chilled by
rain – such is the happy-sad
wonder of impermanence.

When I refrain from
causing myself and others
pain, it’s likely I’ve
not hopped some habitual
train, but stopped, looked, and listened.

“Who cares?” she asked in
a show of indifference,
but beneath the snark,
“Who cares?” was the hard question
she didn’t know how to ask.
