The best thing about
living out here with cats, dog,
birds and deer is they
never feel the need to tell
me how to be or appear.

There aren’t enough seats at the table
for all those whose lives you touched.
Though you left us much too early,
you’re still here with us. Your bold yes
to laughter, loyalty, and learning,
to dogs, to daring, to Diet Coke,
to service, to silly jokes, to standing tall
inspire us to find our yeses and live them
as fully as you did your all.
Even now, we can hear you say
“Come on guys, everyone has a seat at my table.
You just have to find a way.”

melt the snow from trees.

is for a shower of white.
Trees tell their branches
snow may look lovely, but please
hold tight and don’t fall for it.

It’s strange, really, how
a shrunken world expands when
bird song fills the air.

Each stick is precious to Knox.
His pile grows larger each day.
It reminds me of me and my books.
They leave us a lot to chew on.

This road trip we call life
can take some surprising turns,
but it’s easier when we
keep our eyes on the road,
our hands on the wheel,
tenderness in our hearts,
and a smile on our face.
