After storming around,
it seems January has decided
to leave like a lamb.

Questioning ourselves
is an often unwelcome
but necessary task.
It’s so much easier to
question those rigid others.

Slow softenings,
gentle openings,
make space for
the new amidst
remnants of the old.

Even the clouds lit up
when they met the sun
on this winter day.

A gray day, but warm.
A sunny day, but cold…
Both have their pluses
and minuses
like so many things in life.

Desperate for a walk,
Knox seized the chance
to accompany some
neighborhood walkers home,
but when they failed
to invite him in,
he waited while
they gave me a call.

On these winter days,
when the sun sails past
the clouds and splashes us
with golden light
we shiver…not from the cold,
but from delight.

We heard
the same words
from the same mouth
at the same time,
but we walked away
with very different feelings.

If only they would listen,
they might learn something.

We’re all so busy pouring forth,
we take little in.
What if when the final silence nears
all we hear
is the sound of our own voice?
