Seeking inspiration,
I poured through books
written by those said to be wise,
but today I found it
in a surprising burst of affection
for a small ant crossing my path.

streaks of pink
and clouds of gray.
What you see depends
on where you look.

Wrapped in night’s silence,
warmed by the light of the moon,
we finally rest,
lulled to sleep by the presence
of softly lit emptiness.

disturbed branches or leaves –

’til Knox finally had enough
and silenced them with barks and huff.

Night wraps its dark blanket
around us and out here by the pond
some prepare to sleep
and others to awake.
I’ll soon join the nighttime sleepers.
It won’t be long before morning
when Knox, the cats, and the birds
awake requesting to be fed.

Trees, in their search for light,
reach across the divide
and create a space
of overarching beauty.
May we do so too.

the best way to discern our
motives and those of others.
