How We See

We walk through the world

differently according to

how we see. Are we

aware of a sacred spark

in all, in some, or in none?

With Open Eyes

“If you find yourself

dozing off as you practice

meditation, try

meditating with your eyes

open,” they said. I

did. I stayed awake and saw

everything with new

eyes. As I felt my tightened

shoulders ease, I saw,

in my awakened state, both

a strength and fragility.

At Day’s Start

The slightest stirring

of a breeze barely ruffles

the quiet early

morning air, my thoughts the only

noise. Even the crows

keep their cawing to themselves.

Through the silent sky

a single disc of light shines,

signaling the start of day.

Sunless Sunday Afternoon

I sit and watch as

rain gently falls on slowly

greening hills, greeting

forsythia and Bradford

Pear, coaxing them to

fuller bloom. Though I long to

feel the warmth of sun,

I bask in silence on this

sunless Sunday afternoon.

My Dog Toby Does His Part

He lies there on the hill, surveying all

who come and go.

Rain drizzles

down, but

he

stays

at his

post, content,

knowing he has

helped make the world safe for democracy.

If

Perhaps if we take

matters into our own hands

and step out in

our true colors, Winter will

take the hint and melt

away. That’s what the bulbs, trees,

and bushes seemed, at

last, to say. Now we’ll have to

wait and see if Winter grasps

such subtlety.

Just Who

Etched against the evening sky, tall branches

wait, reaching out

to catch the

falling

moon

as

owl asks

once again,

as he often

does, his ever haunting question of who.

For A Fleeting Moment

Why be grateful for

that burst of yellow gladness

some stranger planted

along my path?

Like all such beauty,

it will pass –

droop, shrivel, and decay –

an unwelcome reminder

of all that was and all that lies ahead.

But for a fleeting moment,

gratitude  filled my heart

and my mind  stopped doing

all that minds are wont to do.

Winter Ways

Winter  woes remain.

Though spring has come, so has

icy rain and snow.

~~

                    ~~

What? Those snow flurries

failed to close the schools this time?

– a winter wonder.

        ~~

Winter wind blows cold,

chases the warmth away, leaves

behind these poems.

Light Of A Partial Moon

The room was filled with

the light of a partial moon

but there was nothing

partial about the comfort

brought to an uneasy night.
