In the early morning mist that tree stood
aflame with light,
calling us
to rhyme
and
shine.
Even
if the path’s
unclear and our
rhythm almost gone, poetry remains.

I started to sing
that tired old song of woe,
but my voice gave out
and light broke in, adding notes
to make a far fuller song.

Contradiction and paradox abound,
asking only
that we show
up and
say
yes
to all
we know and
all we don’t, to
what Zorba calls life’s full catastrophe.

When the last leaf falls
the tree stands erect but bare.
All this letting go
creates ample space to hold
what so many seasons sowed.

I know I’m way past
my prime, but when I hear my
son refer to his
doctor as a Teen Titan
of pubescent fame,
I know it won’t be long til
this mommy becomes mummy.

I respectfully request my presence
as this day starts
and I ask
also
to
be
awake,
aware, and
witness to the
wildly beating heart of this wide world.

Every day I learn
something new. Today I found
an emoticon
to express a crappy mood.
Pointed and brown with
no grin, it sends a message
soft but clear: “Step wide
and aside.” On certain days
perhaps I’ll wear one
on my shoulder instead of
the more commonly found chip.

Relational creatures we well
may be, but this
Sunday morning
with not one cloud
in the sky and the sun bright and
full upon the
trees, I bask in
momentary
solitude, choosing to relate
just to the sun,
the cloudless sky,
those arching trees.

Maybe it shouldn’t
matter, but first impressions
often really do.

Is there an upside
to this downside? Years later
my father’s words come
back to me, “We’ll see.” For now,
I’ll try to wait patiently.

When emotion takes over and colors
everything, there’s
still one more
thing I
can
do.
I can
pause and write
a poem or two
’til I can come back to myself and you.

I see the upside now
It’s in this unexpected
burst of creativity.
