Even a small tree
can be in the wrong place at
the wrong time. Nearby
trees, larger and more full, were spared
lightning’s sharp and sudden strike.

Stories are also
windows to the soul and what
we see depends on
the story we view it from.
Are our stories ones
that unite or divide, love
stories or yet more
hate-filled tales raising harsh flags
of unending bitterness?

It’s not a matter
of shedding, of sluffing off
what no longer fits,
though that, indeed, may take place.
It’s more like watching
yourself be slowly dissolved
with no assurance
there will be anything left.
Though you may hope for
a metamorphosis, what
if at the end there’s
only a puddle and no
wings and no bright soaring self?

We start out thinking
our careful plans will take us
where we want to go,
but somewhere along the way
our plans go up in
smoke, we lose our way , and, if
we’re lucky, find ourselves instead.

Confucius on jade:
“Its beauty does not hide its
flaws; its flaws do not
hide its beauties.” Oh if we
could but see the same in us.

Bachelor Buttons
grin as they usher summer
in and coax lovely
Queen Anne to wave her lace at
bees and all their other kin.

When the grouch bug bites,
I’m learning not to flee or freeze, or fight.
Instead, I know the time has come
to let it dine in privacy, alone.

The gold at day’s end
filters through the trees, glitters
on ground, pond, and me.

Curiosity
gave a fast tug, but respect
held its solid ground –
such a small victory, but
a satisfaction so sweet.
