extend their limbs even to
dark, complaining crows.

This stretch of road, I
travel alone, yet always
I know you are there.

When all three of them
agreed I need not use my
limited supply
of time and energy to
meet with their teachers
at the appointed time, I
somehow knew I must
set aside their deep concern
for my well-being and go.

Wild blue heron
takes flight at first light and not
even the pond stirs.

In prayerful meditation I asked to
hear my true name
spoken, but
when it
came
it
was not
“Wise Fox” or
“Soaring Eagle.”
Clear and softly said, it was “Gnat Chaser”.

After a day of
surprising quiet, night came
tiptoeing in.
JDG
No one ever said
this practice stuff was easy –
not when we prefer
to do things our way or no
way. Mindful practice
takes egoless commitment
and a strong, wide-open heart.

How can this chord of fear,
once struck, become just one
slight motif in a larger,
more complex, improvised piece?

What came first was not
what I thought – neither image,
feeling, or memory –
just a sound, full and clear,
the early morning call
of an unseen bird –
first the sound and then
the sense – peaceful, calm, and near.

When we can’t force or
flee, we’re very grateful for
serendipity.
